Piano World Member's Recording Compilation ProjectVolume 1The Piano World Member's Recording Compilation Project (PW-MRCP) aims to create a compilation of recordings by Piano World members. The deliverable of this project will be a set of CD's containing recordings submitted by Piano World members. The outline of the project plan is presented HERE . Call for Recording SubmissionThis thread invites interested members to consider submitting a recording for the Project. Please post to this thread only to declare your intention to submit a recording.[/b] Please use THIS THREAD for other discussion/comments. To aid proper planning of the project, members should be fairly certain that they can follow-through with their intention to submit a recording before declaring their intention here. When declaring your intention to submit, there are only TWO pieces of information that is required: the LENGTH[/b] of the intended submission (e.g., "5 minutes"), and your Piano World Screen-Name[/b]. Information such as the title of the piece you intend to record, the name of the composer, the opus number, arrangement, etc. are encouraged but not yet required at this point. (We will need them eventually, but we figure we can get by without them for another month or so as far as planning is concerned. But providing the extra information may help avoid having different people submitting recordings of the same piece -- e.g., it would be a little awkward to find out at the last minute that we have twenty people submitting a recording of Greensleeves using the same piano arrangement. ). A few things to keep in mind as you think about submitting a recording: - DEADLINE is 30 September 2004. If you intent to submit a recording, please let us know before 30 September 2004.
- COPYRIGHT: Please be mindful of copyright issues -- please help protect Piano World and protect this Project by not submitting material that is still protected by copyright. THIS THREAD(*) is setup for copyright-related query/discussion. The http://www.ascap.com/ website is also a good resource. Generally speaking, your improvisations and original compositions are fine, and pretty much any music published more than 75 years ago are fine -- so your Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Bach, etc. are all covered.
 - RELEASE FORM: To include your recording on the Compilation CD, you will be expected to sign a very simple release form stating that you allow the material you submit to be used royalty-free for this Project once (and only once for this Project, you will retain all rights to all the material you submit). This is to protect Piano World and this Project from any future copyright-related law suite. Your real name and signature will be required on this form, but this information will not be published with the Compilation CD (unless you explicitly want your real name to appear there). A draft of such a document will be posted for your reference in a couple of weeks.
- SKILL LEVEL: This is a community project for every one who loves the piano,
beginners, students, amateurs, professionals, concert pianists -- every one is welcome.[/b] It's not about how well you play, it's about sharing your love and enthusiasm for the piano with your fellow Piano World members. So don't be shy. - Is it "Piano only?" No, your recording need not necessarily be a piano-only performance. We ask only that your recording involves the piano in some significant way. Other than that, feel free to be as creative as you would like.
- Deadline to actually submit your recording will likely be December 31, 2004. This may change, but please plan with that date in mind for the time being.
OK... this is a long post and there are many things involved in getting a recording compilation out, but the basic message is this: We want your recording for a set of CD's that we will be compiling, so please think about it and let us know if you'd like to give us your recording for the compilation.

I can submit solo or duo... one piano four hands or two pianos... hmmm.. Well for now I will just say it will not be more than 15 minutes long can possibly be as short as 4, whatever you prefer. I have to finish editing my current CD before I give the final word on which piece it will be. But count me in. Elena http://www.pianofourhands.com

I would like to record a submission. Or submit a recording.
Either a short Scarlatti piece (about 3 or 4 minutes) or if there's interest in non-classical, "Ne Me Quitte Pas" by Jacques Brel (about 4 to 5 minutes).
But I need a decent piano and recording equipment. See the thread I just started for ideas.

Not sure what, tho.

I can submit Ravel: Jeux d'eau 5:30, or Beethoven Sonata op. 53 ("Appassionata") 20:31, if this is too long. The first movement is (9:30).

Put me down for 3 min, Handel keyboard Suite #4 Allemande. I might change my mind, but it won't change all that much.

I looked up the number of my would-be Scarlatti piece: it's the Aria K32/L423 in Dm.
Will anyone be exercising editorial control over this collection? If two people submit the same piece, will they both go on the disc? Will anyone be determining if someone's submission is of unacceptable performance or recording quality?
Just curious...

I have excellent tape facilities but not much else. So provided I can find somebody local to make a good enough quality CD or file from my recordings I shall contribute two or three of my own pieces in contrasting styles. Total duration > 5' but certainly < 10'

I might think about something along the lines of traditional gospel / hymns (1 or 2 songs at 3 to 5 minutes each - not sure) on my 91-year-old 56" upright piano.... unless someone in San Diego has a 9' or larger grand piano they'd be willing to let me use (also for a CD project of my own)... /me is curious as to what pianos other members plan to record with...

Seaside: I believe the idea here is to include all levels of playing. So I would say "why not include some of us beginners". Jon

I would love to submit something, but I haven't a clue what I would need to record it. Can anyone clue me in on what would be required for a recording worth listening to?

I'll submit 1 or 2 Brahm's Intermezzi. Op.116, #4 for sure and quite possibly Op. 118, #2. Will determine duration and post it later.

I thought about submitting Clair de Lune, but I see someone else already has that. Another piece I thought about has copyright issues. And a third I don't know about. At least I can listen to the CD.

We could have a whole Clair de Lune section. It'd be like those records of 20 different renditions of Pachelbel's Canon.

I thought about maybe some Promenades to go around Penny's other Pictures pieces, but it'd be too boring.
And about this copyrighted material...how are people going to send rock and roll or jazz numbers in unless they are original (are they original?)
(I guess I should buy a mic this weekend and experiment before I commit to anything). Just technical-wise I may not be able to produce anything listenable, never mind quality-wise. :p

Awww, darn, jodi (waves to jodi). I was hoping that you'd join us for a Seattle-area recording session. I think doing the same piece as another person will be okay. There's going to be so much wonderful music on this CD that two skillful, musical, brilliant interpretations of the same work will be fine.

Hi folks,
I can probably do a decent performance of the following "songs," heh heh:
* Scriabin Etude Op. 8/2 in F#- * Scriabin Etude Op. 2/1 in C#- * Rachmaninoff Prelude Op. 3/2 in C#- * Chopin Etude Op. 25/10 in B- * Chopin Etude Op. 10/6 in Eb- * Chopin Etude Op. 10/4 in C#- (maybe) * Chopin Fantaisie Impromptu in C#- * Chopin Nocturne, Op. Post in C#- * Debussy, Claire de Lune (I'm joking, of course...) * Scott Joplin, Weeping Willow, or maybe Maple Leaf and/or Gladiolus Rag
Of all these, the first one (Scriabin Op. 8/2) is probably the only one that's not heard all that often. So that one's probably in, but which of the others would everyone like to hear? Which ones are not overplayed, if any? What would go best on the CD (i.e. which are ones nobody else is likely to come up with?)
Thanks for any & all input...
-Paul

I will try to borrow a mike and mixer and record either a Chopin waltz, or movement from a Beethoven Sonata, maybe the second movement from the moonlight, or the second from the 7th. Not sure of the time, will have to get the stopwatch out.

I you all wouldn't mind too much and it wouldn't annoy anyone AND if you all promise not to laugh, I would like to submit Fur Elise by Beethoven. If you can't stand that, then maybe Moonlight Sonata--1st movement. Not sure about the time, but I am sure it will seem like forever to me. I can't believe I just did this... See Call for Submission, the table in 2nd post [/b], if you see "TBD" in your entry, please post specifics for those TBD's or send me e-mail to fill in those TBD items. Please aim to have those TBD's filled in by 30 September, 2004. Please plan to have all material submitted by 31 December 2004[/b] (i.e., you have three months or so to get your recording ready). Thanks.

All right, at the moment I'm going berserk with my CD recorder, a hundred or so old scores and countless tapes of improvisation. If I don't tie myself down now I'll be vacillating for another week. Here it is then:
"The Call of the Hundred Islands" (1979) 2:20 "Song of Aragorn" (1971) 2:00 "Portrait of Llewelyn Jones" (1978) 2:20 "The Blue Boncus Drag" (1987) 3:20
Ten minutes in total, give or take a few seconds.

I'd like to contribute to the CD. Probably 3-4 min. Music selection TBD; maybe some Chopin, maybe some original music. Thanks for the opportunity; looks like fun.

Edited 10/6/04 for (times). All are sub 5 min's and only expecting one, or two, to make it.
Bach - Non Kom Der Heiden Heinland (splg?), (4.5min) Busoni transcribed organ prelude Other stuff as practice time permits: -Rach C#m prelude (4min) -Chopin Berceuse (3.5min) -Scarlatti sonata (I don't have K#) (3min) -Gershwin's Sleepless Night prelude (3min) . I didn't see anyone else post what I am thinking of and, of course, don't mind if cuts are made.
CJQ, If you want the Bach, its yours. I am not taking dibs and if you choose to do it, that would be cool.
Axtremus, Thanks for the email back. I was expecting it in my forum inbox and simply didn't look at my hotmail until last night. If something can be worked out for recording that would be great. Optimally, I'd like to go low cost solution. I hope to pick up an MD player/recorder. Who knows? Perhaps this project will spawn another Northeast get together of sorts.
Chris

OK!, Just got back from lesson and will now commit to the 2nd movement of Beethoven's Opus 13 Grande Sonate Pathetique. If I have too many or there is a duplicate in there let me know. Also, My daughter Katie would like to submit Clementi's Opus 36 Sonatina 3 1st, 2nd and 3rd movements. You just need to let me sign her up for the forum! She will be 12 years old in February and she knows to stay away from The Coffee Room! Please advise on getting Katie signed up ASAP! Thanks! Mark

Ax, sorry I didn't read everything before... I've just been a bit nervous about this whole thing! Anyway, if it's not too late (and I understand if it is...) here's my submission: Beethoven Ecossaise (probably around 3 minutes)

Hi, I signed up to this board TODAY, and this is perhaps my third post. I would love to submit something, but is it okay even though I'm one day after the deadline? It would be really fun to do something. Since most people have classical stuff here, I'd like to contribue with something else. I'm not sure what it is yet, we'll see. I'm thinking about submitting Chopins 3rd Ballade too, or Etude no 1 op 10. Time approx 10 min. Another thing I could do is to submit Gershwins "Rhapsody in blue", with my school orchestra. The orchestra doesn't sound good though, and I could have played better, but it might be worth listening to. Perhaps we have some Gershwin fans here, who would die to hear Rhapsody in blue?

Is there a fee for submition?
Well, I see from the first post that the deadline has past but if you're willing to take a late one I'd like to submit an original composition (my Nocturne in A-Major). If possible maybe I could submit more than one original composition (I have two others in mind, other than my A-Major Nocturne).

Yes, I was just wondering too. Is there is fee for submissions? One fee for all, or is it per minute? per piece?

Personally, I prefer not to charge any mandatory fee. I'd prefer that people "chip in" on a voluntary basis to fund the project. I'm in the middle of tallying up the submission declarations. After I add up how much material we will be putting together, I'll get some quotes from CD pressing houses and work out some estimates on how much it'll cost to press the CD's and shipped to Frank/Piano World. I'll then post the estimate and you guys can decide for yourselves how much you want to chip-in (or just "pre-order" and "pre-pay" for the CDs). Just so there is no mis-understanding, I will NOT handle the money from your guys. The money will flow through Frank/Piano World, NOT me.[/b] I personally would like to stay focused on getting the CD's produced and pressed, shrink-wrapped and shipped to Frank/Piano World so they can be sold/distributed using PianoWorld.com and/or PianoSupplies.com's existing order-taking and order fulfillment infrastructure. I'll get you a cost estimate described above as soon as I can. You folks hash it out among yourselves and get Frank's buy-in on the retail pricing of the CDs and what you want to do with the excess proceeds (AFTER the project is funded and the cost of shipping the products to you have been accounted for). I will not have an opinion on these.

I noticed that I am not the only one who wants to submit original compositions. What is the possibility of being able to send in the sheet music for the original compositions to be included in the PDF file?

Axtremus et al.:
I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I have blown it on this. I didn't want to commit until I knew what I wanted to record, and with everything else I'm doing, I didn't figure it out. So now it's too late, eh? I guess we'll think about CD release #2 !!

Sorry to get this to you after you already updated your list, Ax, but here it is. All times are aproximate. Give or take a few seconds for each one.
All original compositions:
Nocturne in A-Major: 1'45" Prelude in C-Major: 1'05" Prelude in F-Major: 0'18" So far un-named (in the key of A-Major): 1'20"
Such creative names, eh? LOL! Can you also tell that I favor major keys over minor keys? (Though one of my favriote keys is a minor key: C#-Minor).
